IRELAND
Ireland, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, has always been a dream destination for many. Recently, my cousin and their family embarked on an unforgettable journey along the Wild Atlantic Way, and they were kind enough to share their experiences with me. Below is an account of their trip, along with some amazing pictures they took along the way.
Q: What inspired you to travel to Ireland and explore the Wild Atlantic Way?
A: We've always been fascinated by Ireland's natural beauty and cultural heritage. The Wild Atlantic Way, with its promise of scenic coastal drives and diverse attractions, seemed like the perfect route to experience the best of Ireland.
Q: How was your experience driving along the Wild Atlantic Way?
A: It was incredible! The route stretches over 2,500 kilometers, and every turn brought a new breathtaking view. From rugged cliffs and serene beaches to charming villages, the diversity of landscapes was truly mesmerizing. We felt like we were driving through a postcard..
Q: Tell me about your visit to Slieve League.
A: Slieve League was one of the highlights of our trip. The cliffs are among the highest in Europe, rising over 600 meters above the Atlantic Ocean. The views were simply stunning. We took a hike along the cliffs, which was a bit challenging but absolutely worth it. The sense of awe and the sheer scale of the cliffs were unforgettable.
Q: What was your experience like at Glenveagh National Park?
A: Glenveagh National Park was a peaceful retreat. The park covers over 16,000 hectares and features rugged mountains, serene lakes, and dense woodlands. We visited Glenveagh Castle, a beautiful 19th-century mansion with stunning gardens. The trails around the park were great for hiking and offered spectacular views. We even spotted some red deer and a golden eagle, which was a real treat.
Q: How was your visit to the Glencolmcille Folk Village?
A: Visiting Glencolmcille Folk Village was like stepping back in time. The village is a living history museum that showcases traditional Irish life from the 18th to the 20th century. We explored the thatched cottages, each representing a different period, and learned about traditional crafts and folklore. The kids enjoyed participating in a weaving workshop. It was educational and a lot of fun.
Q: Did you get a chance to visit the Giant’s Causeway?
A: Yes, we did! The Giant’s Causeway was absolutely fascinating. The unique basalt columns, formed by ancient volcanic activity, create a landscape unlike anything we've ever seen. Exploring the area and reading the informational signs provided great insights into the science and legends behind this natural wonder. It's a must-visit for anyone traveling to Northern Ireland.
Q: What was your experience with Irish pubs like?
A: The pubs were fantastic and definitely a highlight of our trip. They are so much more than just places to have a drink—they are the heart of Irish social life. We visited several pubs along the way, including some in small villages. The atmosphere was always warm and welcoming. We enjoyed traditional music sessions, hearty food, and engaging conversations with the locals. It was a wonderful way to experience Irish culture firsthand.
WHAT WE WISH WE HAD KNOWN
When you land in Dublin, make sure one of your first stops is to get yourself a Horizon card. Using this card when shopping allows you to get a refund for the Value Added Tax (VAT) when you depart.
One thing we wish we had known before renting our car was that the insurance we bought online, which covered us at home in the US, was not enough. We either had to allow the rental company to put a $2500 hold on our credit card or pay an extra $300 for their insurance. Also, be prepared to drive a stick-shift, as automatics are rare and much pricier. While renting a smaller vehicle is wise for maneuvering the narrow roads, fitting all passengers and luggage was quite the game of Tetris.
When it's time to go home, make sure you arrive at Dublin Airport much earlier than you would at other airports. This is one of the few places where you clear US customs before boarding your plane. In addition to customs, you'll want to get that VAT refund mentioned above. We didn't arrive early enough and had to deal with getting our refund once we got home, which involved notarized statements and sending everything back to Ireland. It's much easier to handle it at the airport on your way home.
